PM Fasal Bima Yojana (Crop Insurance)

PM Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) is the Central Government's crop insurance scheme. If your crop is damaged by drought, flood, cyclone, unseasonal rain, pests or disease, you get compensation. Farmers pay a small premium, at most 1.5% of the sum insured for Rabi food and oilseed crops, and the governments pay the rest.

What is PM Fasal Bima Yojana?

PMFBY was launched on 18 February 2016. It protects farmers against crop loss from natural calamities, pests and diseases, from sowing to just after harvest. The Centre has allocated ₹12,200 crore for it in 2026-27, and it is run by 25 states and union territories. Claims are paid directly into the farmer's bank account.

Latest update: Rabi 2026-27

  • Andhra Pradesh is continuing PMFBY (and the weather-based scheme RWBCIS) for Kharif 2026 and Rabi 2026-27. Last dates to enrol:
    • Rabi crops other than paddy: 15 December 2026
    • Paddy: 31 December 2026
    • RWBCIS: cashew by 15 November, tomato by 15 December
  • In AP the state paid the full premium for farmers in 2023 and 2024, but stopped this in 2025. Farmers now pay their own small share.
  • Telangana left PMFBY in 2019-20. In late September 2026 the state said it plans to bring back crop insurance from the Yasangi 2026-27 season, but no official notification with dates has been issued yet (15 October 2026). Check with your Agriculture Extension Officer before relying on it.
Don't wait for the last week. If you miss the cut-off date, your crop is not covered for the whole season.

How much is the premium?

CropFarmer pays (maximum)
Kharif food grains and oilseeds2% of the sum insured
Rabi food grains and oilseeds1.5% of the sum insured
Commercial and horticulture crops5% of the sum insured

The rest of the premium is paid by the Central and State governments, 50:50. Example: if the sum insured for your crop is ₹50,000 per hectare, your Rabi premium is at most ₹750 per hectare.

What is covered?

  • Yield loss in standing crops from drought, dry spells, floods, inundation, cyclones, hailstorms, lightning, pests and diseases (assessed for your notified area).
  • Prevented sowing: if bad weather stops you from sowing after spending money, up to 25% of the sum insured.
  • Post-harvest loss: crops left to dry in the field are covered for up to 14 days after harvest against cyclones and unseasonal rain.
  • Localised calamities on your own field: hailstorm, landslide, inundation, cloudburst and natural fire.

Not covered: war, nuclear risks, riots, theft, and losses that could have been prevented, or crops and areas that are not notified.

Who can enrol?

  • All farmers growing notified crops in notified areas, including tenant farmers and sharecroppers with the documents the state asks for.
  • Loanee farmers (with a crop loan or KCC) are enrolled by the bank, and the premium is deducted from the loan. In AP you can opt out by giving a declaration at least 7 days before the cut-off date.
  • Non-loanee farmers can join voluntarily.
