What is PM Ujjwala Yojana?

Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), run by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas since 2016, gives deposit-free LPG connections in the name of women from poor households, so families can cook with clean gas instead of wood or coal. Under Ujjwala 2.0, the first refill and a gas stove are also given free.

Latest update: subsidy now on 4 refills a year

  • Ujjwala customers get a subsidy of ₹300 per 14.2 kg cylinder, credited to the bank account.
  • In June 2026 the government cut the number of subsidised refills from 9 to 4 a year, citing high global LPG prices. That means up to ₹1,200 a year per household. Refills after the fourth are at the normal price.
  • In AP and Telangana you may also get state help: Deepam-2 (three free cylinders a year in AP) and the ₹500 cylinder under Mahalakshmi (Telangana).

Who is eligible?

  • A woman aged 18 or above from a poor household.
  • No LPG connection in the same household already.
  • The household should fall in a listed category, such as SC/ST households, PMAY-Gramin beneficiaries, Antyodaya (AAY) card holders, forest dwellers, most backward classes, tea and ex-tea garden tribes, island and river-island residents, or a poor family that gives a self-declaration (deprivation declaration) as per the scheme.
  • Migrant families can apply with a self-declaration of address.

Documents needed

  • Aadhaar of the applicant woman (and of adult family members as asked)
  • Ration card or other document showing family members
  • Bank account details (Aadhaar-seeded) for the subsidy
  • Address proof (or self-declaration for migrants)

How to apply

  1. Apply online at pmuy.gov.in by choosing your oil company (Indane, Bharat Gas or HP Gas) and distributor, or visit your nearest LPG distributor.
  2. Submit the KYC form with your documents. The distributor checks your details.
  3. After approval you get the connection, cylinder and stove. Do your Aadhaar eKYC with the distributor when asked, so the ₹300 subsidy keeps coming.
The Ujjwala connection is free. Don't pay agents for a "free gas connection." Pay only the official price for refills at your distributor.
